Why are the thermal sciences needed for energy systems?

Why are the areas of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and heat transfer pertinent to technology involving energy? I can see thermo, but I'm not sure why the other two are so big in this field. Can you explain or provide examples? Thanks.
